Press Release – For Immediate Release – 23 March 2023

BBI Solutions and LAT Water have signed an agreement to install a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant to treat trade effluent and other wastewater produced at BBI’s site at Crumlin, South Wales. The LAT Water plant is a significant investment and will cut BBI’s sewer discharges, reducing the treatment required by Welsh Water as well as generating cost savings for BBI.

The BBI site at Crumlin produces reagents and provides services for the global Medical Diagnostics industry, and is making improvements to its trade effluent process. LAT Water will deliver an energy-efficient solution that will separate and recover a high percentage of clean water. The clean water can be reused on-site reducing BBI’s water needs and related water demand from Welsh Water. With plans for growth and expansion in the future, the LAT Water solution will enable BBI to continue to meet discharge consents.

The LAT Water system is an environmentally friendly process using waste or low-grade heat to recover high-quality clean water from contaminated industrial wastewater in a sustainable process. LAT Water has received multiple awards from Innovate UK and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy for innovative technology.

LAT Water CEO Mark Hardiman commented: “We are excited that BBI have chosen to work with LAT Water on this project. This is an opportunity for us to show that LAT Water can deliver sustainable, low-cost water treatment solutions for the pharmaceutical sector.”

BBI’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Damian Evans commented: ‘The investment and partnership with LAT Water is a significant milestone on our sustainability journey and ensures we further minimise the impact of our operations on the local environment.’

The plant is scheduled to begin operation during the summer of 2023.

As the biggest airport in the UK and the largest travel hub in the country, Heathrow Airport facilitates the transport of over 81 million passengers per year, as well as cargo for businesses (valued at over £188 billion annually) making it vitally important to companies and individuals alike.

For our team at LAT Water, Heathrow Airport is a critical part of our supply network as it allows us to visit clients across the world (as well as fly clients out to see us); ship parts and components for building and maintaining each LAT Unit; transport our mini testing units, and lots more.

We pride ourselves in providing the most energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and innovative industrial wastewater treatment solution on the market, so ensuring that we have a supply chain that supports our efforts as a business is extremely important. Being eco-conscious in our internal operations as well as throughout project delivery helps ensure consistency in our company’s message as well as producing maximum positive impact on the communities and locations we look after.

In its sustainability strategy report for 2022, Heathrow Airport maps out its proposal for Net Zero Aviation, including plans to transform into a zero waste airport by maximising reuse and recycle schemes; as well as becoming net zero in the air and on the ground – helping improve air quality and enhancing local communities’ quality of life.

These goals closely match our own at LAT Water as we strive to recover the highest possible amount of clean water following wastewater treatment, digestate treatment, leachate treatment, and other industrial waste management processes to protect a range of ecosystems. At present, our wastewater management solutions are capable of recovering up to 95% clean water from complex wastewater streams. These include (but are not limited to) pollutants such as pharmaceutical chemicals, organic matter, methane and other harmful gases, heavy metals, and more.

What makes the LAT Unit particularly energy-efficient is the use of waste heat as an energy input which helps condense and recirculate water vapour throughout the system to drive the process meaning the overall energy input for the LAT Unit is greatly reduced, especially compared to existing market solutions. This has helped our client businesses cut their operational costs and focus financial resources more efficiently to drive their business forward.

Watch our full interview with Heathrow Airport below:

Mark Hardiman, CEO at LAT Water said: “We treat heavily-contaminated industrial water to recover the maximum amount of clean water which topically today is useful to help solve some of the water problems and droughts facing the world.

“Heathrow, first of all, is really important as a connectivity and transport hub for us. We need to travel all across the UK, so it’s domestically important – but what is really important are the international connections and connectivity. That’s really important for getting our customers to come and see us and also delivering key components and support for those projects. That importance of Heathrow is critical for our business.

“A key part of our offering to customers is that we deliver an environmental, sustainable solution to them and that means reaching down into our supply chain so our key suppliers also share our sustainability goals and objectives. So Heathrow developing its sustainability is really important for us. Heathrow delivering on sustainability would really enhance our credibility and ensure that they are our absolute preferred supplier.”

A ground-breaking onsite landfill wastewater (leachate) thermal treatment and separation process called LAT™ (Low temperature Ambient pressure Technology) has demonstrated a 48% reduction in operating costs and a 70% reduction in energy usage at Viridor’s Broadpath landfill site in Devon. Now commercially available, LAT™ is set to change the way local councils and landfill operators manage leachate forever.

LAT™ uses low-grade onsite waste heat or renewable energy sources which considerably reduce energy usage by up to 70% while cutting carbon emissions. Local communities also benefit from better air quality due to the reduction of road tankers currently used by many operators to truck raw landfill wastewater to remote offsite treatment facilities. Over one year, using LAT™, Viridor’s Broadpath landfill site is set to save the equivalent emissions of nearly one million car-miles.

Existing global leachate treatment technologies consist of outdated, energy-hungry processes which contribute significantly to climate change. LAT™ challenges these techniques head on by removing the need for traditional leachate treatment processes: Reverse Osmosis – membrane type solutions that cannot effectively operate beyond moderate water recovery levels (little beyond 50%), and Thermal Boiling Solutions that use boiling water techniques and pressure vessels to treat leachate.

To date, most research in the field has focused on incremental improvements in base technologies rather than seeking a step change solution in the treatment of leachate, both in landfill and across other water intensive processes. LAT™ takes a whole new approach to return up to 90% of water to be reused and/or recycled, onsite and at new levels of efficiency.

Mark Hardiman, CEO of LAT Water said: “We’ve been running the pilot at a 10 m3/day demonstration trial for six months at Viridor’s Broadpath landfill site in Devon and the results speak for themselves. We have also been operating a 120 m3/d LAT™ in China for the past eighteen months, so we know that LAT™ is scalable. We’re now making LAT™ available to all landfill operators and local councils across the UK on a lease basis, which reduces the CAPEX hurdle and shortens the ROI”.

The use of waste heat provides net carbon savings as well as putting to use heat sources which would otherwise be polluting the environment and contributing to global warming. Product concentrate can be treated within existing discharge consents, without the need for the costly addition of new permits. LAT™ is a vital technology in the decarbonisation goals of landfill operators and local councils while delivering a significant return on investment (ROI) through efficiency savings.

The pilot has been partly funded by the department of Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), as part of their Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (IEEA). The programme is managed by The Carbon Trust with supports from Jacobs and it provides funding for energy efficiency process technologies, alongside incubation and commercialisation support.

Tim Rotheray, Innovation Director of Viridor commented: “The future of the landfill industry depends on managing the legacy issues of the site. More than 50% of the costs for us related to the disposal of the leachate and by reducing these costs and recovering the resources from the leachate, we take an important step towards a circular economy. We are hugely excited to be working with LAT Water on this game-changing technology and look ahead to substantial cost and efficiency benefits in the years to come”.

Paul McKinney, BEIS IEEA Programme Manager at the Carbon Trust added: “LAT Water has demonstrated a step change energy efficient solution for treating contaminated water which could form a key technology within the UK’s drive to reduce energy use and consequently achieve reductions in carbon emissions.”

The LAT™ process makes use of waste heat which would otherwise be discharged into the environment, as the key energy source to drive the process. Combined with the reduction in diesel fuel used by reducing the number of tanker movements, and more energy efficient separation technology, the process is set to shake up the wastewater management sector as a whole.

LAT Water are pleased to announce the completion of successful investment. Led by IW Capital, £3.3 million has been raised in the round to accelerate LAT Water’s commercial growth in developing sustainable wastewater treatment solutions globally, following early success both in the UK and China.

The LAT™ technology process separates and recovers clean water from highly contaminated industrial water utilising waste heat. The system is highly scalable and can be installed for treating flows from one to over 1,000 cubic metres per day of effluent, delivering up to 60% cost savings for the operator and contributing to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

The process is capable of treating wastewater for a wide range of applications, including, notably, the treatment of wastewater from landfill sites. This helps both with the odour associated with such sites as well as reducing the costly and environmentally damaging need to transport the waste off-site for treatment.
The investment follows a successful start to 2021 for the company. Despite difficulties faced by COVID-19, LAT Water has kept on track with key targets both across the globe and closer to home. The maiden installation located at the Daxin landfill, in Shenyang, China, has now been successfully operating for over two years. This has been followed by the construction of a showcase facility at a Viridor site in the west of England.

Mark Hardiman, LAT Water CEO commented: “LAT Water are delighted to conclude this latest round of funding and partner with IW Capital. IW share our direction, motivation and ambition and we are excited to begin this partnership. This funding enables us to push forwards our targets of providing innovative, sustainable, low-cost solutions for wastewater treatment.”

Luke Davis, CEO of IW Capital, commented on the investment:
“We are very excited to invest in this innovative water treatment company that is positioned to make a major positive impact in addressing the climate crisis. It is inspiring to see the steps the company is taking in addressing what is a growing problem for industries worldwide. We look forward to supporting LAT’s experienced management team and help deliver future growth.”

Viridor and a UK water purification company have secured government support to pursue a pilot
project which will demonstrate how to harness landfill gas energy as part of a process to extract
pure water from the leachate produced at a Devon landfill site.

Viridor and Newbury-based LAT Water have successfully secured a £548,000 grant from the
Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator,
managed by the Carbon Trust, for a 21-month pilot project at Viridor’s Broadpath Landfill site in
Tiverton, near Exeter, in Devon.

The project will use low grade heat from Viridor’s landfill gas engines at ambient pressure to
concentrate the leachate and extract the water, achieving environmental benefits in retaining the
water resource while reducing CO₂ emissions by a potential 80% reduction in tankering
requirements.

Terry Murphy, Viridor Technology and Innovation Forum Chairman and Landfill Director, said:
“Viridor is proud of the fact that our modern, engineered landfill sites are designed to extract landfill
gas which can be transformed to create electricity.

“To have the potential to take this process even further and harness heat from the landfill gas
process and use it to take pure water from leachate is an innovative solution and Viridor is
enthusiastic to pursue through this pilot project. Viridor is pleased to be working with LAT Water on
this process at the Broadpath Landfill site.”

Mr Murphy said Viridor was committed to transforming waste to create resources and the leachate
treatment pilot project being undertaken at Broadpath was an example of this commitment.

The sustainability potential of treating leachate on site would also not only significantly reduce costs
but also impact positively on the road miles associated with tankering this material away from
landfill sites.

LAT Water Chairman Peter Champness said: “I am excited that we have won further government
support to LAT Water’s commitment to develop innovative sustainable low energy cost solutions to
the growing challenge of managing complex Industrial waste.”

Fast growing Newbury based company LAT Water Limited (LATW) provides an environmentally friendly low cost solution to a wide range of industrial waste and salt water problems.

Following a successful joint grant application with Viridor Limited under the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator, managed by the Carbon Trust, LAT Water has started work on a pilot project to treat leachate from Viridor’s Broadpath landfill site near Exeter. Leachate is one of the most difficult Industrial waste effluents to treat and a key target sector for LAT Water in the United Kingdom and internationally. Viridor is an ideal partner for LAT Water as a leading company in the circular economy transforming waste to generate renewable energy, high-quality recyclates and raw materials. The LAT™ process uses low grade waste heat from Viridor’s Landfill Gas engines at ambient pressure to concentrate leachate and extract pure water. The completed facility is designed to demonstrate superior energy and cost savings, environmental benefits and reduced CO₂ emissions and is a precursor to generating additional orders in UK and internationally.

The Chairman of LATW, Peter Champness, commented:

“I am excited that we have won further government support to LAT Water’s commitment to develop innovative sustainable low energy cost solutions to the growing challenge of managing complex Industrial waste”.

Terry Murphy, Viridor Technology and Innovation Forum Chairman and Landfill Director, said:

”Viridor is proud of the fact that our modern, engineered landfill sites are designed to extract landfill gas which can be transformed to create electricity. To have the potential to take this process even further and harness the waste heat from the landfill gas process and use it to take pure water from leachate is an innovative solution and Viridor is enthusiastic to pursue through this pilot project. Viridor is pleased to be working with LAT Water on this process at the Broadpath Landfill site in Tiverton.”

Mr Murphy said Viridor was committed to transforming waste to create resources and the leachate treatment pilot project being undertaken at Broadpath was an example of this commitment. The sustainability potential of treating leachate on site would also not only significantly reduce costs but also impact positively on the road miles associated with tankering this material away from landfill sites.

Newbury-based LAT Water Limited signed a Contract on 20th August 2018 with Jiangsu WELLE Environment Co. Ltd, China to establish a showcase facility for LAT Water’s innovative industrial wastewater technology in Shenyang. WELLE is the leading Chinese player in the treatment of leachate and are the ideal partner for LAT Water to exploit the huge opportunities available in the Chinese market.

LAT Water have forged a link with WELLE to create a platform for future development in the leachate market in China by being able to demonstrate reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions with cost savings of 40% compared to traditional processes.

“Landfill leachate, or “black water”, which is created when rain or ground water percolates through the mass of mixed municipal and industrial waste in landfills, has come under new China EPA water discharge standards. The country has implemented new rules for discharge and is funding the effort to modernize the methods and systems for handling this effluent …..authorities, agencies and industry stakeholders in China and other countries are actively looking for alternative solutions to the treatment of this effluent, which is one of the most highly contaminated and highly complex byproducts of industrial operations.”. Source: ChinaWaterRisk

This initiative runs alongside a UK Government funded project (the Shanghai-UK Industrial Challenge Programme) where LAT Water are working with Shanghai Denovo Environmental Protection Technology Company to provide a solution to industrial wastewater from a pharmaceutical facility as well as a means to further develop LAT Water’s business.

LAT Water’s Chairman, Peter Champness added:

“This is the first of what we expect will be many major projects in China. The WELLE backed showcase together with the Denovo Shanghai project are catalysts for growth and part of LAT Water’s ongoing International business development strategy.”
